Note View

The note view is a project based note taking tool. Notes can be written in rich text and contain links, images and other types of attachments. Your notes are stored in the project and can be accessed by anyone who has access to the project.

In the context of GenomeBrowse, you can create a link to a genomic region, save an image of that region and note why that region was of interest. You can also export notes out as either HTML or PDF to share with others without requiring access to the project.

Creating a New Note

To create a new note, add a new note view and select Open a New Note. A new note can also be created from an existing note by clicking on the newNoteIcon (Create New Note) icon.

Initial Note View

After creating a new note view you can choose between creating a new note and opening an existing note

To change the name of the note, just overwrite the Note default name in the header.

An existing note may be opened from a Note View by clicking on the Note Selection menu and selecting the desired note. A new note may be created from this same menu. The current note can also be deleted from this menu.

Open Existing Local Note

The list of existing notes is displayed in the Open an Existing Note dialog.

An existing note may also be opened after creating a new note view by clicking on Open an Existing Note and selecting a note that has already been created in the project.

Open Existing Local Note New View

The list of existing notes is displayed in the Open an Existing Note dialog from a new note view.

Editing a Note

The note view is a rich text editor. Text can be entered and formated using the dialog’s controls in much the same manner as you would when using a word processor. The only difference, is to make changes to the font, size, color, etc. you have to have text selected first.

The Note View contains the following icons in the toolbar (from left to right):

  • Note Selection: See Opening an Existing Note above.

  • Export Note: Allows you to export a note in either HTML or PDF formats.

  • Insert GenomeBrowse Bookmark: Inserts a genomic coordinate bookmark. These bookmarks are links to the region within GenomeBrowse and will cause the GenomeBrowse view to zoom to the region of the genome that was in view when the bookmark was set.

  • Insert GenomeBrowse Screenshot: Inserts a cleaned up screenshot of all active plots at the current zoom into the note. This “screenshot” displays the plots via the Save as Image controls. See Saving Plots from a GenomeBrowse Window for more information. The image is inserted at the cursor’s current position or at the end of the note if no cursor is present.

    Note

This requires having added a GenomeBrowse view to the project.

  • Insert GenomeBrowse Screenshot of Selected: Inserts a cleaned up screenshot of the selected plot(s) at the current zoom into the note. This “screenshot” displays the plots via the Save as Image controls. The image is inserted at the cursor’s current position or at the end of the note if no cursor is present.

    Note

This requires having added a GenomeBrowse view to the project.

The rest of the toolbar contains standard text editing controls. These controls can also be accessed by right-clicking anywhere in the text box of the note view.
