Installing and Initializing

Golden Helix SVS is optimized for running on systems directly. While X11 forwarding, remote desktop and running Golden Helix SVS via ssh is supported there can be problems that arise from the method of the remote connection. We will do our best to help support various methods of remotely connecting to computers running Golden Helix SVS. However, we cannot guarantee that all methods will work.

Installation Under Windows

installer

SVS Setup Program

Double-click on the self-extracting executable (SVS-Win32-x.x.x.exe or SVS-Win64-x.x.x.exe). The x.x.x will be a version number, e.g. SVS-Win32-8.4.1.exe. It will open up an install dialog screen.

The default is to install the software in “C:Program FilesGolden Helix SVS”.

Under Windows, you also have the option of adding a SVS program icon to your desktop, a Quick Launch icon, and having SVS available from the Start Menu.

Once SVS is installed, you can run the program either by using the shortcuts or by running the executable. This will launch the login and registration dialog. If you already have a Golden Helix account, enter in your credentials to launch the application. Otherwise register an email address.

Installation Under Linux Distributions other than RHEL and CentOS

  1. Download the Golden Helix SVS archive for Lin64 to a convenient user directory.

  2. The bundle is a ”.tar.gz” archive file that will extract a folder called “Golden Helix SVS”. You can extract the archive using Linux GUI or command line tools. On the command line perform the following command:

    ~/Programs/> tar -xzvf SVS-Lin64-8.4.1.tar.gz

  3. Once extracted, you can move the resulting Golden Helix SVS folder to another location of your choice at any time.

    ~/Programs/Golden Helix SVS> ./SVS

Note

You may create a symbolic link to the SVS program and even put it on your path so that it can be launched from any directory. This also allows you to run scripts from various directories.

Note

You may need to install some system GUI libraries on your system by running:

sudo apt-get install libqt5gui5

Our Linux binaries are compiled on Ubuntu 14.04 for maximum compatibility with most Linux distributions. Known incompatibilities exist with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and CentOS version 5 and earlier. RHEL versions 6.x and newer are supported as well as Ubuntu version 14.04 and newer. If you have RHEL/CentOS 6.x or higher see the instructions below Installation Under RHEL and CentOS Linux Distributions.

Please contact support if your experience issues running Golden Helix SVS on your Linux machine.

Installation Under RHEL and CentOS Linux Distributions

This is a new binary available starting with version 8.3.2 of SVS. If you have an earlier version of SVS and RHEL6+ or CentOS6+ you will need to uninstall the old version of SVS and then manually install the new version. You will not be able to use the updater tool to move from a previous version to 8.3.2 if you have RHEL/CentOS 6.x or higher.

  3. Once extracted, you can move the resulting Golden Helix SVS folder to another location of your choice at any time.

  4. Go into the Golden Helix SVS folder and run the SVS App. The program will launch and present the login and registration dialog. If you already have a Golden Helix account enter in your credentials to launch the application. Otherwise register an email address and to create an account to launch the application. You can do this with the following commands:

    ~/Programs/> cd "Golden Helix SVS"
    ~/Programs/Golden Helix SVS> ./SVS

Note

You may create a symbolic link to the SVS program and even put it on your path so that it can be launched from any directory. This also allows you to run scripts from various directories.

Our RHEL binary is compiled on CentOS6 for compatibility with RHEL/CentOS versions 6.x and higher.
